More beef imported in comparison with previous year

Bovine meat imports for January 2021 amounts to 641 tons, representing an increase of 25% if compared to January 2020, according to Agri Inspec.

The FOB (free on board) price for January 2021 was R44.56 p/kg and for January 2020, it was R35.51 p/kg. This represents an increase of 25% in the price per kilogram. The major imports originated from Namibia with 63 tons.

   Live weaner imports for January 2021 amounts to 16 524 units. This represents a decrease of 12% if compared to January 2020. The price was R7 592.09 per unit which is 13% higher than the January 2020 price.

   Sheep meat imports for January 2021 amounts to 93 tons. This represents a decrease of 18% if compared to January 2020. The FOB price was R49.61, which is 43% higher than the January 2020 price. The major imports originated from Australia (93 tons).

   Live sheep imports for January 2021 amounts to 4 771 units, representing a decrease of 26% if compared to January 2020.The price was R1 100.27 per unit, which is 27% higher than in January 2020. Namibia was the major exporter to South Africa with 4 639 units.
