Year-on-year jump in bovine imports

Bovine meat imports for October 2021 amounts to 1 033 tons, representing an increase of 167% if compared to October 2021, according to Agri Inspec.

The free-on-board price for October 2021 was R38.46 p/kg and it was R48.39 p/kg in October 2020. This represents a 20% decrease in price per kg.

The major imports originated from Botswana (150 tons).

Live weaner imports for October 2021 amounts to 43 305 units. This represents an increase of 72% if compared to October 2020. The price was R4 522.44.80 per unit, which is 42% lower than October 2020.

Sheep meat imports for October 2021 amounts to 218 tons. This represents an increase of 22% if compared to October 2020. The free-on-board price was R21.94, which is 34% lower than the October 2020 price.

The major imports originated from Australia (209 tons).

Live sheep imports for October 2021 amounts to 16  941 units. This represents an increase of 80% if compared to October 2020.The price was R1 148.74 per unit, which is 6% higher than October 2020.

Namibia was the major exporter to South Africa with 16 666 units.
